Opening BIL Files
The BIL file type is primarily associated with ArcView.
What is a BIL file?
How to open a BIL file
You need a suitable software like ArcView from ESRI to open a BIL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your BIL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a BIL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

BIL file extension format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the BIL files produces the following result:
The BIL file ending includes many different file formats. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 10% of all BIL files have the same signature 00 3C 1C C6 00 3C 1C C6. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. BIL files can be up to 3.4 MB in size, but are often around 3.4 MB - 3.4 MB. Files like these are sometimes connected to prism, stable, tmean, provisional and tdmean.
- 8% of all BIL files use the same file format, which have the signature ñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØ. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. Most of these files are 3 MB to 250 MB in size. Such files sometimes refer to chirps, prec and tmin.
All other BIL files (82%) have no consistent format. These files sometimes refer to clutter, sample, data or esrha. If you want to find out what your BIL file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
