What is a BMA file?

BMA files mostly belong to OpenTTD. Your BMA file can be a file that stores different kinds of data. It may be used as a Bitmap Array file, which many times is used by OpenTTD to hold bitmap graphics for the game. In this form the file holds image data that a game engine or specialized viewer can display.
It can also be a file that contains a 3D model as observed in the game King's Bounty: The Legend. Here the file holds the geometry and texture information necessary for building game objects in three dimensions.
Another possibility is that the file functions as a proprietary financial document. When used by Sage 50, it represents a Swiss bank statement in a binary format sometimes called a Binary Advanced Master File. More details about this use can be found at Sage's webpage.
Finally, some BMA files are used as karaoke audio files by the BMA Karaoke Player. In this case the file contains audio data that a compatible player can read to present karaoke tracks. More information is available at Ugreen.
It is important to determine the file's origin. Below are some tips that can help:
  • Identify the source: Look at where the file came from or what program created it.
  • Match the purpose: Use a game engine for bitmap or 3D models; use financial software if it comes from Sage 50; or use a karaoke player if it is an audio file.
  • Backup: Save a backup before making any changes.
  • Consult online resources: Check the linked pages for further instructions.
  • How to open BMA files

You need a suitable software like OpenTTD to open a BMA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your BMA file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a BMA file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert BMA files:

    1. OpenTTD
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. BMA files are often referred to as OpenTTD data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
    2. BMA Archiver
An experimental archiver by Alexander Cherenkov. BMA = Burrows-Wheeler Transform + Move To Front + Arithmetic coding. The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: 21 42 4D 41, ASCII: !BMA.

    BMA format details:

To view or edit BMA files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the BMA files comes to the following conclusion:

The BMA file extension is not common and is used by different programs with different formats. The following file formats are most commonly found in BMA files:

The remaining 50% of all BMA files are different files with different signatures, often e.g. AMDZRB. Files like these are sometimes linked to mahnung. If you want to find out what your BMA file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with BMA files

    • Associate the BMA file extension with the correct application.
    • Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest BMA file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available OpenTTD update.
    • To make sure that your BMA file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
