What is a BPN file?

BPN files mostly belong to ArchiCAD by GRAPHISOFT. BPN is a backup file which is generated by autosave feature of the ArchiCAD application. ArchiCAD is a building information modelling program which is used to design and construction of buildings. User can save backup copy of the current project in BPN file. Autosave feature of the application automatically saves the model data in BPN file format to avoid the potential loss.

4 Steps to Open an Unknown .BPN File

BPN files can originate from different programs and aren't universally openable.

1. Identify the Source: If received from an architect, it is likely a GRAPHISOFT ArchiCAD drawing backup. If from a business analyst, it may be a Business Process Model file.
2. Check the Header: Open the file in a text or hex editor to inspect the first bytes.
   • Readable XML often indicates a BPMN diagram.
   • Binary data usually points to a proprietary ArchiCAD backup.
3. Use the Original Software: The original program is usually required. Try GRAPHISOFT ArchiCAD or a BPMN modeling tool, and ask the sender if uncertain.

BPN file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. The BPN file extension is used very often and mainly uses a defined BPN format. The following file formats are most commonly found in BPN files:

• 80% of all BPN files start with the bytes ROF FDB , which are crucial for this file format. They consist of unreadable binary data. The average file size is 22 MB with most files being between 7 MB and 76 MB in size. The file type is relatively new. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. ROF FDB. • 15% of all BPN files have the same signature WW. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. BPN files can be up to 110 MB in size, but are often around 660 KB - 23 MB. These files are often associated with variante and plans.
