What is a BRO file?

BRO files mostly belong to Creatacard by Broderbund. The BRO filename extension is usually associated with 3D models consisting of trees, bushes, or shrubs created using OnyxTREE, a 3D software compatible with Windows and Mac. Apart from the trees and shrubs, a BRO file created with OnyTREE also holds the settings for wind, lighting, and other effects. The BRO file format is also used to store a range of other graphics such as brochures, greeting cards, and page layouts created using software like Avantquest and CreataCard. Bryce, a legacy 3D modelling software for Windows and Mac uses plugins that have the BRO filename extension to extend its functionalities. In music production, the BRO file format was used by to store guitar/song data created using BR-532 Digital Studio.

How do you open BRO files?

You need a suitable software like Creatacard to open a BRO file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your BRO file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a BRO file directly in the browser:. A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. The BRO file extension is rather rarely used and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in BRO files:

45% of all BRO files use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also called Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This is a complex container format used by earlier versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows programs. Compound files always start with the bytes ÐÏà¡±á (hex code D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1). The file contains sections that are named something like Contents and PMW Document. BRO files are between 97 KB and 4 MB in size. The file type is very old but is also used today. These files are often associated with brochure, program, handbook, service, adult, book, menu and page.
15% of all BRO files are based on the well-known JFIF file format. JFIF is short for JPEG File Interchange Format. It is a bitmap graphic that uses JPEG compression. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 33 KB to 99 KB. The files contain the following words: 8BIM, JFIF and Photoshop 3.0.
