All about CFE Files
The CFE file type is primarily associated with Apache Lucene.
What is a CFE file?
CFE files serve different internal purposes. The main use is as an Lucene compound file that acts as a container for search index data used by Apache Lucene.
Other formats include:
- CryptoForge encrypted: Holds secured encrypted data.
- 1C:Enterprise configuration: Stores system settings and can work as a ClickOnce Compiled Manifest. More details are available at 1C Enterprise.
- Course File: Utilizes a ZIP container to bundle educational assessment materials.
- Encrypted video fragments: Contains MP4 video parts that require VLC media player for playback. See VLC media player.
How to open CFE files
You need a suitable software like Apache Lucene to open a CFE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CFE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CFE file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

CFE file format details:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the CFE files:
CFE is not a commonly used file extension and covers different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in CFE files:
- 45% of all CFE files start with the bytes ?×l, which are crucial for this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are 210 bytes to 360 bytes in size, with a median of 290 bytes. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as .fdx, Lucene50CompoundEntries, .fdt, .nvd, .fnm, _Lucene50_0.doc, _Lucene50_0.tim and _Lucene50_0.pos. The following filename is common: _0.cfe or _1.cfe.
- 15% of all CFE files use the ZIP algorithm, i.e. a CFE file contains several compressed files. The number of files included is on average 13 and ranges from 3 to 40. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. CFE files are between 2 KB and 560 KB in size. The files contain the following words: assessment and json.
The remaining 40% of all CFE files are different files with different signatures, the following 5 formats can be found: MP4 and CryptoForge. Sometimes used for xcge, baiaf, cabj, hcaf or xlsx. If you want to find out which format your CFE file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .cfe file to analyze".
Technical Data for CFE File Extension
a cfe compound container is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with CFE files
- Associate the CFE file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open compound containers. Because only the current version supports the latest CFE file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Apache Lucene update.
- To make sure that your CFE file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .CFE file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
