What is a CGR file

CGR files mostly belong to CATIA by Dassault Systèmes. A CGR file contains geometry data used to visualize a 3D mechanical/industrial product part (CATPART) model created with CATIA industrial product design software. CGR format was introduced in CATIA version 5. Another type of CGR file is a 3D model bundled with the Lumion Model Library in Lumion architectural/landscape rendering software. Quest3D, a discontinued 3D modeling program used a CGR file to store channel group information for a 3D scene. Contents of this file include properties and settings which control the flow of animations, surfaces, and models in a 3D scene.

How do you open CGR files?

You need a suitable software like CATIA to open a CGR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CGR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CGR file directly in the browser:. If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. The CGR file extension is used very often and covers different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 65% of all CGR files start with the bytes V5_CFV2, which are crucial for this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The file size is in the range of 11 KB to 42 MB. The file type is relatively new. The files contain the following words: V5_CFV2, MainDataStream and Describe. Files like these have the following tags: catpart, product, gadm, gpla, allcatpart, catproduct, getrag and assy.
• 25% of all CGR files start with the magic bytes __3_NEWPNFCT, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. CGR files can be up to 15 MB in size, but are often around 58 KB - 8 MB. The files contain the following words: NPDS, NPMS, NPNE, __3_NEWPNFCT and NPE5. An example of a file name is OO Loader.cgr. Files like these are sometimes connected to walk, african, idle, loader, caucasian and asian.
