All about COS Files
The COS file type is primarily associated with Capture One.
What is a COS file?
How to open COS files
You need a suitable software like Capture One to open a COS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your COS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a COS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

COS file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the COS files:
COS is not a common file extension and mainly uses a special format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 65% of all COS files store the data in the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The files are on average 5 KB in size and range from 4 KB to 6 KB. The file type is very recent. The keywords <?xml version="1.0"?>, <IMG>, Author, Camera_Make, Camera_Model, Firmware Version 1, K="Camera_Firmware" V="Firmware and K="Camera_Lens" V="Canon are typical for these files. Such COS files store data about cosmetic.
- 6% of all COS files start with the bytes 01 00 00 00 crucial for this file format. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are 6.8 KB to 6.8 KB in size, with a median of 6 KB.
All other COS files (29%) have no uniform format. The category is image or strip. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your COS file!

How to solve problems with COS files
- Associate the COS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open temporary configuration/changes. Because only the current version supports the latest COS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Phase One manufacturer website after an available Capture One update.
- To make sure that your COS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .COS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
