All about CUF Files
The CUF file type is primarily associated with Cocos2d-x & Hardware Tools.
What is a CUF file?
For many users, a CUF file is a custom font file used in game development. In this case, it is linked with the Cocos2d-x framework. The file contains bitmap font data that the engine uses to display text in games.
Other CUF files are firmware or update files designed for specific hardware systems. These include:
How do you open CUF files?
You need a suitable software like Cocos2d-x & Hardware Tools to open a CUF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CUF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CUF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

CUF file format:
To view or edit CUF files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Below is our analysis of the CUF files:
CUF is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type includes various formats for various programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 50% of all CUF files have the same signature CUF0. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. CUF files are between 170 KB and 510 KB in size. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. The keywords CUF0, !"#$%&'()*+,-./0123456789:;<=>?@ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQR and !"#$%&'()*+,-./0123456789:;<=>?@ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRS are typical for these files. The following filename is common: font_10.cuf or georgia_italic_10.cuf. Such files sometimes refer to gioconda, italic, header, ingame, bold, uppercase, frontend and brand.
- 20% of all CUF files start with the bytes AA AA 00, which are crucial for this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 20 MB to 26 MB. Examples of file names are 15DDX_APP_0130.cuf or DDX_APP_0150.cuf.
All other CUF files (30%) have no consistent format, the following 5 formats exist: UTF-8. Often described as firasans, flash, description, large or norse. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your CUF file!

- Associate the CUF file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open proprietary resource files. Because only the current version supports the latest CUF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Cocos2d-x & Hardware Tools update.
- To make sure that your CUF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .CUF file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
