What is a D3D file?

D3D files mostly belong to Direct3D by Microsoft. D3D, short for Direct3D is a file extension for files containing data that's used by Direct3D library, a component of Microsoft's DirectX API. The D3D data file consists of specifications that are used to render/visualize 3-dimensional graphics, effects, animations, and games on Windows platforms. In addition to these, rules specified in a D3D file can be used to accelerate hardware capabilities and expose advanced features of a computer's GPU to achieve such functions as: hardware 3D rendering in 2D overlay panes, texture mapping/blending, as well as Z/W-buffering or stencil buffering. 3D game objects, animations, monsters, buildings, and other models created using GameMaker are also stored in D3D files. A third use case for D3D filename extension is with Corel Dream, a legacy tool that used D3D file format to store 3D drawings created in CorelDraw version 6 which was available on Windows 95 platforms.

How to open D3D files

You need a suitable software like Direct3D to open a D3D file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
