To view or edit DCN files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. DCN is rarely used as a file extension and is used by different programs with different formats. The following file formats are most commonly found in DCN files:

50% of all DCN files are based on the well-known DICOM file format. DICOM is short for Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine. DICOM files are used to store, exchange, and transmit medical images from radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and radiation therapy, but also personal data about the patient. These files start with the 3 bytes ï»¿ (hex: EF BB BF), the so called byte order mark (BOM). These files contain text and words, not binary data. The average file size is 500 KB with most files being between 660 bytes and 71 MB in size. The keywords AllowErrors=FALSE, Module, Operation, [Data.1], [Runtime], [Task.1], Date=ASAP, Time= and Server=Item Master are typical for these files.

The remaining 42% of all DCN files are files with no common format, often e.g. config, certificate and JSON. They are often associated with employee, dept or item.
