Opening DCN Files
The DCN file type is primarily associated with RadiAnt DICOM Viewer.
What is a DCN file
How can I open a DCN file?
You need a suitable software like RadiAnt DICOM Viewer to open a DCN file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DCN file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DCN file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

DCN format details:
To view or edit DCN files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below you will find our evaluation of the DCN files:
DCN is rarely used as a file extension and is used by different programs with different formats. The following file formats are most commonly found in DCN files:
- 50% of all DCN files are based on the well-known DICOM file format. DICOM is short for Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine. DICOM files are used to store, exchange, and transmit medical images from radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and radiation therapy, but also personal data about the patient. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are on average 10 MB in size and range from 6 MB to 19 MB. It is a modern file type. The following keywords are characteristic: DICM and 1.2.840.10008.5.1.4.1.1.12.1. A usual file name is 1.dcn.
- 8% of all DCN files store the data in the UTF-8 file format. UTF-8 is the World Wide Web's most common character encoding for Unicode. UTF-8 files can be viewed with any text editor. These files start with the 3 bytes (hex: EF BB BF), the so called byte order mark (BOM). These files contain text and words, not binary data. The average file size is 500 KB with most files being between 660 bytes and 71 MB in size. The keywords AllowErrors=FALSE, Module, Operation, [Data.1], [Runtime], [Task.1], Date=ASAP, Time= and Server=Item Master are typical for these files.
The remaining 42% of all DCN files are files with no common format, often e.g. config, certificate and JSON. They are often associated with employee, dept or item. You can get all the details of your DCN file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .dcn file to analyze" above.
Technical Data for DCN File Extension
a dcn medical image file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with DCN files
- Associate the DCN file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open medical image files. Because only the current version supports the latest DCN file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available RadiAnt DICOM Viewer update.
- To make sure that your DCN file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .DCN file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
