What is a DDC file?

DDC files mostly belong to Decos Document Control. DDC files are not a single type of file but rather containers for various kinds of data.
When you encounter a DDC file, it may be used for one of the following purposes:

Document Metadata: Often, these files act as a Decos Document Container that holds metadata for document control systems.

Design Data: In electronic design automation, a DDC file may store Design Compiler Data including constraints and design information. Tools from Synopsys are used to manage such files.

Device Configuration: Some DDC files serve as configuration files for Datalogic scanners, recognized as Datalogic Device Configuration files. These are handled using Datalogic’s configuration tools, as seen on Datalogic.

Game Save Data: In gaming, especially in titles like Deadliest Catch: The Game, a DDC file may record progress and settings.

Chart or Report Data: In some systems, DDC files keep dynamic chart data or design reports associated with DataFlex systems.

How to open a DDC file

You need a suitable software like Decos Document Control to open a DDC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DDC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DDC file directly in the browser:. To find out what program is needed to open DDC files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the DDC files is as follows:

The DDC file extension is not widely used. Such a file covers different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:

25% of all DDC files use the same file format, which have the signature 07 44 44 43 20 31 2E. The content consists of binary data as well as text and words. The average file size is 1 KB with most files being between 1 KB and 2 KB in size. This file type is new and state-of-the-art. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. DDC 1, uncdocroot and path. decos20180601.ddc is a typical file name.
15% of all DDC files start with the magic bytes 03 17 10 63 00 40 FF 03, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are on average 32 KB in size and range from 16 KB to 3 MB. Such DDC files store data about netlist and proj.

The remaining 60% of all DDC files are files with no common format, the following 7 formats exist: JetDB, XML and Scene. These files sometimes refer to data or autosave. Just click the "Choose your .ddc file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your DDC file is.
