What is a DAR file?

DAR files mostly belong to Disk Archiver. The DAR extension has a number of uses but is mainly used to identify compressed files.

  • Primary use: The DAR extension is used by files compressed using the DAR (Disk ARchive), a command-line archiving tool and a replacement for TAR. DAR files are compressed individually with either Gzip or Bzip2. The DAR extension is generally used by an application's compressed files that are used as backups of single or groups of files.
  • Other uses: This extension is also used by the DVD Architect Project. This program uses DAR to create DAR files which are used to store information about DVD authoring projects, including the number of chapters in the DVD, the location of the media files, other metadata, and more. These files do not contain the actual media (images, clips, audios) in the project but they are used to create the final product after editing.
  • Adoption: Files compressed using the DAR format can only be opened additional decompressing or extracting utilities avalaible for the Windows and Unix platforms. Sony DVD Archcitect enables users to open DAR files on Windows, while Disk Archive and KDE Disk Archiver are those used to open them on Linux.

How do you open DAR files?

You need a suitable software like Disk Archiver to open a DAR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DAR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DAR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

DAR file extension format:

To find out what program is needed to open DAR files, you need to determine the file format. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below is our analysis of the DAR files:

The DAR file type is used by different programs with different formats. The two most common formats are as follows:

All the rest of the DAR files (45%) have different formats, the following 4 formats can be found: JPG and DAR. Files like these are sometimes linked to data. You can get all the details of your DAR file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .dar file to view" above.
