What is a DEP file?

DEP files mostly belong to Dependency Walker. DEP files have different roles. They are not a single standard file type.
These files can be:

Call recording packages: Some DEP files use the ZIP format to store call recordings. They follow the Open Packaging Conventions and need an archive tool (like WinZip or 7-Zip) to view the inner files.

Executable dependency files: Other DEP files are built as Windows executables that provide dependency details (for example, C# dependency information used with the .NET Framework). The Dependency Walker tool works with these files. See more at Dependency Walker.

Project dependency files: Some versions are in XML format. These hold dependency information for projects and work with development tools such as MPLAB X IDE.

How to open a DEP file

You need a suitable software like Dependency Walker to open a DEP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To find out what program is needed to open DEP files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the DEP files produces the following result:

DEP is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type is used by many programs, each with its own file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in DEP files:

• 20% of all DEP files are using the well-known EXE file format to store the data. EXE is the abbreviation for executable and is the standard executable file format on Windows. The format can be identified by the letters "MZ" at the beginning. Executable files can also be used to distribute viruses and other types of malicious software (malware). The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. A typical file size is 54 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: !This program cannot be run in DOS mode. Select.Html.dep or HiQPdf.dep is a typical file name. Such files sometimes refer to html.
• 10% of all DEP files are based on the zip format, so several files are combined and compressed into one DEP file. 15 to 50 compressed files with names like [Content_Types].xml, index.owl and \_rels\ are common. If you want to see the included files and images, simply rename the file extension to .zip and double-click it. A typical file size is 110 KB. The keywords [Content_Types].xml are typical for these files.
