What is a DEP file?

DEP files mostly belong to Dependency Walker. DEP files have different roles. They are not a single standard file type.
These files can be:

Call recording packages: Some DEP files use the ZIP format to store call recordings. They follow the Open Packaging Conventions and need an archive tool (like WinZip or 7-Zip) to view the inner files.

Executable dependency files: Other DEP files are built as Windows executables that provide dependency details (for example, C# dependency information used with the .NET Framework). The Dependency Walker tool works with these files. See more at Dependency Walker.

Project dependency files: Some versions are in XML format. These hold dependency information for projects and work with development tools such as MPLAB X IDE.

How to open a DEP file

You need a suitable software like Dependency Walker to open a DEP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To find out what program is needed to open DEP files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the DEP files produces the following result:

The DEP file type covers different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in DEP files:

• 30% of all DEP files are based on the zip format, so several files are combined and compressed into one DEP file. Most often they are 10 to 50 compressed files. File names inside are [Content_Types].xml, index.owl and \_rels\. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. • 10% of all DEP files save the data in XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. A typical file size is 6 KB. The keywords <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>, <AssetObjects..GameDependencyData>, <RequiredGameArtIDs>, <Element>, <id text="F5D94984-9531-46FF-92D9-3B65894F212B"/> and <name text="Civ7"/> are typical for these files. Civ7.dep or Civ6.dep is a typical file name.

All other DEP files (60%) have different formats, the following 8 formats exist: Keil uVision project Dependencies, EXE, config, STRUCTBEGIN and QUANTICDREAMTABINDEX.
