What is a DIST file?

DIST files mostly belong to Apple Installer by Apple. DIST files are commonly found in two varieties - one acts as a ZIP archive that stores other files and an index that maps the contents of the distribution. The other is used as a configuration script in package distributions on Unix platforms such as Linux and MacOS.

• Use: These files are primarily used by developers make application development faster and more secure. They offer a reusable way of sharing base application data by simply requiring developers to rename template configuration files as .dist. .DIST File Not Opening? How to Fix It:

Because .DIST files originate from various programs, they aren't universally openable.

1. Identify the Source: A Mac software download suggests an Apple Installer package. Source code repositories often use them for default configuration templates.

DIST file format:

To view or edit DIST files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our examination of the DIST files comes to the following conclusion:

DIST is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type is used by different programs with different formats. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 25% of all DIST files internally utilize the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The files are often between 770 bytes and 18 KB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, installer-gui-script minSpecVersion, standalone, phpunit and title. The file name phpunit.xml.dist or distribution.dist is typical for these files. These files are attributed to english and german.
• 15% of all DIST files are based on the zip format, so several files are combined and compressed into one DIST file. A DIST file contains 26 to 140 files, the average being 126. Common included file names are \META-INF\dist.xml, \niagara_home\, \niagara_home\defaults\lonStandardConversion.xml, \niagara_home\defaults\migrator.properties, \niagara_home\defaults\niagaraAxBacnetObjectTypes.xml, \niagara_home\defaults\system.properties, \niagara_home\defaults\unitConversion.xml, \niagara_user_home\ and \niagara_user_home\stations\. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. DIST files can be up to 130 MB in size, but are often around 180 KB - 34 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. niagara_home/defaults/bacnetObjectTypes.xml and vINr. Such files are related to backup, and usually contain person-related data.

The remaining 60% of all DIST files are files with no common format, the following 6 formats exist: shell script, 7z, default and PKGM.
