What is a DIST file?

DIST files mostly belong to Apple Installer by Apple. DIST files are commonly found in two varieties - one acts as a ZIP archive that stores other files and an index that maps the contents of the distribution. The other is used as a configuration script in package distributions on Unix platforms such as Linux and MacOS.

  • Use: These files are primarily used by developers make application development faster and more secure. They offer a reusable way of sharing base application data by simply requiring developers to rename template configuration files as .dist. Other developers using these files only need to add their own data in order to start working with the application. Distributions tools such as Git will ignore files with machine-specific settings, e.g. files with the YML extension to prevent security data such as database passwords from being committed. Since DIST files do not carry passwords or any other form of personal data, they are considered safe for distribution.
  • Generation: DIST files could be created using PackageMaker, but the program is no longer supported. MacOS currently offers pkgbuild and productbuild that may offer an alternative.

.DIST File Not Opening? How to Fix It:

Because .DIST files originate from various programs, they aren't universally openable.

  2. Check the Header: Inspect the first bytes in a text editor or hex viewer:
    • Readable XML often indicates an Apple Distribution Script.
    • Plain text suggests a developer's config template.
    • "PK" or garbled text implies a compressed archive.
  3. Use the Original Software: You usually need the original program like Apple Installer, Xcode, or a text editor; if uncertain, ask the sender.
