Opening an HTM File
The HTM file type is primarily associated with Visual Studio Code.
What is an HTM file
How to open HTM files
You need a suitable software like Visual Studio Code to open an HTM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your HTM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a HTM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

HTM file extension format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the HTM files produces the following result:
The HTM file extension is very common and includes different formats for the applicable programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 35% of all HTM files are HyperText Markup Language with DOCTYPE files, which are based on the HTML file format. HTML is short for HyperText Markup Language. It is the standard markup language for documents designed to be displayed in a web browser. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The file size is in the range of 1 KB to 480 KB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. lang, content, charset, meta http-equiv, <head>, <!DOCTYPE html>, utf-8 and xhtml. Such HTM files store data about download, index, watch, view, search, html, update, descarga, iisstart, message, gmail and video.
- 40% of all HTM files internally utilize the HTML file format. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. HTM files can be up to 5 MB in size, but are often around 170 bytes - 18 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. head, html, text, meta http-equiv, content, content-type, charset, us-ascii, auto, body dir and div dir. Some examples of file names are ATT00001.htm. Files like these are sometimes connected to attachment, sheet, tabstrip, messages, body and list.
All other HTM files (25%) have no uniform format, the following 7 formats exist: UTF-16 (LE), XML, PDF, script and div. They are often associated with filename, history, missing, erizesi, report or vergi. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your HTM file!

an htm web page is a special file format by Microsoft and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with HTM files
- Associate the HTM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open web pages. Because only the current version supports the latest HTM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Visual Studio Code update.
- To make sure that your HTM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .HTM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
