Opening a DNS File
The DNS file type is primarily associated with DynSite.
What is a DNS file
How do you open DNS files?
You need a suitable software like DynSite to open a DNS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DNS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DNS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert DNS files:
- DynSite by Noël Danjou
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. DNS files are often referred to as DynSite plugins because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Duke Nukem Forever (game save) by GearboxDuke Nukem Forever is a first-person shooter video game available on Steam. Its "game saves" are stored in a DNS file. This file format is classified as Game.
- Sublime (flat-file database) by SublimeSublime is a lightweight code editor compatible with Windows, Linux, and macOS platforms. It can open and edit a DNS file containing a flat file database. This file format is classified as Database.
DNS file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the DNS files looks like this:
The DNS file extension is not widely used. Such a file covers different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 35% of all DNS files start with the magic bytes ; ; , which are always the first bytes of this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The files are on average 1 KB in size and range from 610 bytes to 4 KB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Database file, hostmaster, ; Zone version: 1, Default zone and scope. Files like these are sometimes connected to local, universalsompo, partsmaster and vishipel.
- 20% of all DNS files start with the bytes 00 50 47 44 01 00 00 00 01 crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. Most of these files are 1 MB to 860 MB in size. Examples of file names are GAME.DNS or INSTALL.DNS. These files are attributed to data, insdata and text.
All other DNS files (45%) have different formats, the following 4 formats can be found: Database and AMAT. These files are often connected to itrf, reysan, surey, reysanatlantic or donusum. You can get all the details of your DNS file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .dns file to analyze" above.

How to solve problems with DNS files
- Associate the DNS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open plugins. Because only the current version supports the latest DNS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Noël Danjou manufacturer website after an available DynSite update.
- To make sure that your DNS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .DNS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
