What is a DOCM file?

DOCM files mostly belong to Word by Microsoft. A DOCM file is a macro-enabled document saved in Office Open XML (OOXML) format. Microsoft introduced DOCM in Office 2007 as a solution for adding Visual Basic for Applications macros to a Word document. A macro is a sequence of commands which automate some repetitive operation in DOCX documents. Like other documents saved in Office Open XML format, a DOCM file is actually a ZIP archive. All embedded images/objects, XML representations of text, settings, formatting, metadata, hyperlinks/bookmarks other information in the document are saved alongside the macros in the same archive. Third-party applications like Writer can open DOCM documents.

How to open a DOCM file

You need a suitable software like Word from Microsoft to open a DOCM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
