What is a VBA file?

VBA files mostly belong to Microsoft Office. A VBA file is a file that stores Visual Basic for Applications source code, used to automate and extend tasks within Microsoft Office applications.

Purpose: Holds macros and scripts designed to automate repetitive processes in programs like Word and Excel.

Functionality: The code can manipulate document content, perform calculations, and interact with the user interface through the host application’s VBA engine.

How do you open VBA files?

You need a suitable software like Microsoft Office to open a VBA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. The VBA file extension is not common and covers different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:

• 45% of all VBA files use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This general-purpose file format provides a file-system-like structure within a file for the storage of arbitrary, application-specific streams of data. Compound files begin always with signature bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 (ÐÏࡱá). The data in this file is stored in streams whose names are Contents and VBA_Project. The files are often between 9 KB and 2 MB in size. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. The file name Project.vba or HostIntegration.vba is characteristic of these files. Files like these are sometimes connected to integration, autoload and host.
• 10% of all VBA files use the same file format, which have the signature Sub . These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. Most of these files are 92 bytes to 5 KB in size. These files can be linked to macro.
