What is a DOTX file?

DOTX files mostly belong to Word by Microsoft. A DOTX file is a document template saved in OpenXML format using Word document processing software. It comprises XML documents, bookmarks, hyperlinks, formatting, and media sources compressed using ZIP archive compression format. DOTX templates are similar to DOTM templates. However, a DOTX template does not contain macros. All versions of Word released since 2007 can create, edit, and save DOTX document templates.

How to open a DOTX file

You need a suitable software like Word from Microsoft to open a DOTX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DOTX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DOTX file directly in the browser:. DOTX file format:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the DOTX files looks like this:

The DOTX file extension is rarely used and predominantly uses a uniform format. The following file formats are most commonly found in DOTX files:

• 95% of all DOTX files use the ZIP algorithm, so several files are compressed and saved in one DOTX file. The average file count is 24 with most DOTX files containing between 11 - 30 compressed files. File names are e.g. [Content_Types].xml, \_rels\.rels, \docProps\app.xml, \docProps\core.xml, \word\_rels\document.xml.rels, \word\document.xml, \word\endnotes.xml, \word\fontTable.xml, \word\footnotes.xml, \word\settings.xml, \word\styles.xml and \word\webSettings.xml. If you want to see the included files and images, simply rename the file extension to .zip and double-click it. The files are on average 75 KB in size and range from 12 KB to 1 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. [Content_Types].xml. Files like these are sometimes connected to template, word, letterhead and blocks.
