Opening a DS File
The DS file type is primarily associated with LMMS.
What is a DS file?
How do you open DS files?
You need a suitable software like LMMS to open a DS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

DS file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. In the following you will find our evaluation of the DS files:
The DS file extension is quite common and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The file formats most commonly found in DS files are:
- 25% of all DS files are based on the popular UTF-16 (LE) file format. UTF-16 (LE) is an character encoding system for Unicode. UTF-16 files can be viewed in any modern text editor. These files start with the two bytes FF FE, the so called byte order mark (BOM). These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. DS files are between 11 KB and 910 KB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as WINDOWS and 1.9.8r10. Such files are related to data.
- 9% of all DS files internally utilize the EXE file format. EXE is the abbreviation for executable and is the standard executable file format on Windows. The format can be identified by the letters "MZ" at the beginning. Executable files can also be used to distribute viruses and other types of malicious software (malware). If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are 6 KB to 1 MB in size, with a median of 150 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. !This program cannot be run in DOS mode. A usual file name is wiatwain.ds or M1130.ds. Such files sometimes refer to twain.
All the rest of the DS files (66%) have different formats, often e.g. DrumSynth Preset, JSON, ZIP, XML, Torrent and EEsof. Often described as case, management, formulaire, sample, point, sign or temp. Just click the "Choose your .ds file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your DS file is.

How to solve problems with DS files
- Associate the DS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open drum samples. Because only the current version supports the latest DS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the LMMS Developers manufacturer website after an available LMMS update.
- To make sure that your DS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .DS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
