What is a DSL file?

DSL files mostly belong to Lingvo Dictionary by ABBYY. The DSL file is a dictionary file. This file is used by the Lingvo Dictionary software.

• Main use of the file: The Lingvo Dictionary application enables its users to translate words in different languages while simultaneously granting them the ability to look up word definitions. The DSL files tend to contain dictionary entries. These entries are comprised of the card headword (word being defined) and body (word definition).
• Other file uses: The DSL file can be used for the purpose of creating a LSD file. One can create a DSL file using any text editor with the correct formatting and naming the file with a .DSL extension. This file can then be compiled into a LSD file using the Lingvo Dictionary application, which allows the conversion of DSL files to LSD file format.

How do you open DSL files?

You need a suitable software like Lingvo Dictionary to open a DSL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. DSL file format:

To view or edit DSL files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the DSL files looks like this:

The DSL file ending includes a lot of different file formats for different programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 15% of all DSL files store the data in the UTF-16 (LE) file format. UTF-16 (LE) is an character encoding system for Unicode. UTF-16 files can be viewed in any modern text editor. These files start with the two bytes FF FE, the so called byte order mark (BOM). These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. Most of these files are 29 KB to 150 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. NAME, CONTENTS_LANGUAGE, #INDEX_LANGUAGE "English", En-En, Advanced and Dictionary. The file name en-en_CALD4.dsl or en-en_CALD4_abrv.dsl is characteristic of these files. These files can be linked to cald and abrv.
• 15% of all DSL files use the popular UTF-8 file format. UTF-8 is the World Wide Web's most common character encoding for Unicode. UTF-8 files can be viewed with any text editor. These files start with the 3 bytes  (hex: EF BB BF), the so called byte order mark (BOM). The content also consists of readable text fragments, which can be viewed with the help of a text editor. A typical file size is 530 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: #CONTENTS_LANGUAGE "English", #INDEX_LANGUAGE "Greek", #NAME "Loeb", %Apollonius Rhodius, -001.001 (APOLLONIUS OF RHODES, Argonautica) and [c darkmagenta][b]AP. A common filename is loeb.dsl.
