What is a DTM file?

DTM files mostly belong to Surpac by Dassault Systèmes. DTM filename extension is mainly associated with movie recordings captured by Dolphin game console emulator during gameplay. This file doesn't contain a video. Instead, it is a tool-assisted superplay (TAS) script or macro recorded by Dolphin when a player performs operations such as pressing the buttons on the game controller. Each action is recorded as a frame which the emulator can automatically recreate when you playback the saved DTM movie file. DTM is also the filename extension of a digital terrain file used by land survey, geology, and mine planning software such as Surpac and Topocad. This DTM file contains models of real world terrains such as roadways, excavation sites, and waste dumps.

How to open DTM files

You need a suitable software like Surpac to open a DTM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DTM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DTM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

DTM format details:

To find out what program is needed to open DTM files, you need to determine the file format. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the DTM files produces the following result:

The DTM file extension is rarely used and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:

All other DTM files (55%) have no uniform format. The category is surface or combined. You can get all the details of your DTM file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .dtm file to analyze" above.

How to solve problems with DTM files

  • Associate the DTM file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open digital terrain models. Because only the current version supports the latest DTM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Dassault Systèmes manufacturer website after an available Surpac update.
  • To make sure that your DTM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .DTM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
