Opening an ECM File

The ECM file type is primarily associated with Error Code Modeler.

What is an ECM file?

ECM files mostly belong to Error Code Modeler by Neill Corlett. An ECM file is a compact disc image prepared for compression using ECM (Error Code Modeler). When a user runs a disk image (e.g. a CDI or BIN) file through ECM, the program generates an ECM file with a compound filename extension (e.g. example_disk.bin.ecm). Data and settings stored alongside a disk image provide information that allows compression programs to better compress the disk image. By pre-processing a disk image with ECM before compressing it, the final file size can be 15% to 20% smaller. Another type of ECM file is an example bundled with Cmpro product lifecycle management software.

How to open ECM files

You need a suitable software like Error Code Modeler to open an ECM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ECM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ECM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert ECM files:

  1. Error Code Modeler by Neill Corlett
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. ECM files are often referred to as Error Code Modeler disk images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. Cmpro (examples) by Psasys
Cmpro is a product lifecycle management program for managing business processes in medium/large organizations. It uses examples saved in ECM files. This file format is classified as Data.

ECM file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the ECM files:

The ECM file extension is rather rarely used and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The two most popular formats are as follows:

All the rest of the ECM files (40%) have different formats, often e.g. Opus. These files sometimes refer to harvest, dragon, nature, metal, solid, track, back, data, gear or moon. Just click the "Choose your .ecm file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your ECM file is.

How to solve problems with ECM files

  • Associate the ECM file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open compressed disk images. Because only the current version supports the latest ECM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Neill Corlett manufacturer website after an available Error Code Modeler update.
  • To make sure that your ECM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .ECM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
