What is an EID file

EID files mostly belong to eID Middleware. EID files serve several distinct roles. They are most commonly used as Belgian electronic ID card files that hold personal identification data. These files are managed by official software such as eID Middleware and viewed with applications like the Belgian eID Viewer. Additionally, EID files appear in other forms:

Compressed Database: Some files use the ZIP format to store archived data. They are typically managed with tools like WinZip.

Exam Documents: A number of EID files use the Microsoft Compound format. These hold exam data and are sometimes known as the Exam Data Interchange Format, which can be opened by compatible programs such as ExamView or even Microsoft Word.

Bulgarian Accounting Files: Certain files carry revenue data for the Bulgarian Revenue Agency and work with specialized accounting software.

Game Resource Archives: A few EID files are used by game engines (for instance, the Enigma Engine) to package game resources such as those in Serious Sam.

How to open EID files

You need a suitable software like eID Middleware to open an EID file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To find out what program is needed to open EID files, you need to determine the file format. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. The EID file ending includes different formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in EID files are:

• 55% of all EID files use the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. Most of these files are 12 KB to 15 KB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Such files are related to carte, identit and paspoort, and contain personal data.
• 10% of all EID files use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Microsoft Compound File is a complex container format used by some versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows-centric applications. It has features similar to those of a filesystem format. Compound files always start with the bytes ÐÏࡱá (hex code D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1). There is also a CLSID, a globally-unique identifier of a COM (Component Object Model) object: 00020906-0000-0000-c000-000000000046. The internal containers are called 1Table, CompObj, Data, DocumentSummaryInformation, SummaryInformation and WordDocument. The files are often between 20 KB and 660 KB in size.
