Opening an ELA File
The ELA file type is primarily associated with TradeStation/Electrum.
What is an ELA file?
Overview: ELA files have more than one use. The primary use is with TradeStation where the file works as an EasyLanguage Analysis file. This file type stores trading strategy code that is used for backtesting and executing trades.
Other uses include:
- Event Log Archive: These files are used to store system or application event logs. They may be compressed using GZIP, so you might need a decompression tool to view the contents.
- Electrum Wallet Data: Some ELA files serve as a file format for the Electrum wallet. Use the Electrum software to open and read wallet data.
Usage Instructions: Open a TradeStation ELA file within the TradeStation platform to access your trading strategy. If the file is an event log archive, decompress it using a GZIP tool before viewing with a text editor. For Electrum wallet data, launch Electrum to view the file’s information.
FilExt.com note: Even though the file extension is the same, determining its proper use depends on its source. Confirm which software originally created your ELA file to choose the right method to open it.
How do you open ELA files?
You need a suitable software like TradeStation/Electrum to open an ELA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ELA file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ELA file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

ELA file format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Below you will find our evaluation of the ELA files:
ELA is seldom used as a file extension and covers different formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in ELA files are:
- 50% of all ELA files are associated with EasyLanguage Storage / Archive. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. Most of these files are 4 KB to 31 KB in size. The files contain the following words: ORCMP and IMASTER.MST. The file name tradefile.ela is characteristic of these files. Files like these are about stad.
- 15% of all ELA files start with the magic bytes 4C 41 00 00, which are always the first bytes of this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. ELA files can be up to 6 KB in size, but are often around 420 bytes - 6 KB. An example of a file name is 0e490f9f0047333244db8fa7d25c2133.ela.
All other ELA files (35%) have no consistent format, the following 3 formats can be found: GZIP. Files like these are sometimes linked to rule. You can get all the details of your ELA file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .ela file to analyze" above.

How to solve problems with ELA files
- Associate the ELA file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest ELA file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available TradeStation/Electrum update.
- To make sure that your ELA file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .ELA file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
