What is an EMD file?

EMD files mostly belong to HDFView. An EMD file can be many things. The most common use is as an Electron Microscopy Data file that stores scientific imaging information using the HDF5 format. This format uses a hierarchical structure to hold complex data captured by instruments from companies like Thermo Fisher Scientific. For more on the HDF5 format, see the HDF5 solutions page.
Other uses include:
  • Emotion Model Data files that contain facial or expression model information.
  • Energy Meter Data files, sometimes stored in a Microsoft Compound structure, which may also be used as Embroidery Machine Design files.
  • Electromyography Data files that can also have an alternate purpose in design for embroidery.
  • 3D model files used in animation and game workflows (for instance, with MikuMikuDance, 3ds Max or other modeling tools).
  • Compressed chess game data files found in niche applications.
  • Embroidery files which sometimes overlap with data used for memory card formats in gaming systems.
  • FilExt.com tip: Each file type needs the matching software to open and view its contents. Check the file’s header or metadata to find clues about its internal format.

    How to open EMD files

You need a suitable software like HDFView to open an EMD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your EMD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a EMD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

    EMD file format:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the EMD files looks like this:

You will often come across the EMD file type. This covers different formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in EMD files are:

All the rest of the EMD files (50%) have different formats, often e.g. DATACOMP 1, DOC, config, ZIP, EMD and JEMD. Sometimes used for hair, bust, eann, block, boots, apmb or char.
