Opening EPJ Files
The EPJ file type is primarily associated with EPLAN Electric P8.
What is an EPJ file?
Other implementations include:
- MagiCAD for Revit project file: Used to hold building design and BIM data. More details can be found at MagiCAD.
- Photo album project: Employed by Photo Express (or Photo Explosion) to organize photo album or photobook projects.
- PCB design file: Utilized by EAGLE PCB Design Software to maintain printed circuit board layouts. Visit Autodesk Eagle for additional insights.
- AutoCAD project data file: Often uses a ZIP-based structure to compress and archive design data for AutoCAD-related projects.
- CIMConnect project file: Applied for managing particular project datasets in niche environments.
FilExt.com tip: Open an EPJ file with the exact software that created it. If the file is in XML format, a simple text editor can reveal its structure; if it appears compressed (ZIP), then using an archive extractor may help clarify its contents.

EPJ file format details:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the EPJ files looks like this:
EPJ is not a common file extension and includes various formats for various programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 35% of all EPJ files internally utilize the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The files are on average 14 MB in size and range from 5 MB to 94 MB. The file type is relatively new. The files contain the following words: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>, EplanPxfRoot Name, PxfVersion, SchemaVersion, Type, Description and Source="" SourceProject="". Such files are related to control, project and panel.
- 20% of all EPJ files start with the bytes 67 00 00 00 47 04 00 00, which are crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. EPJ files can be up to 200 KB in size, but are often around 73 KB - 140 KB.
All other EPJ files (45%) have different formats, the following 6 formats can be found: ZIP, EPJFILE, EPJ and WARNING. You can get all the details of your EPJ file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .epj file to analyze" above.
