What is an EQU file?

EQU files mostly belong to ChemEQL. EQU files are data files that store scientific information in plain text form. They mainly serve two purposes:

Chemical Equation Files: some of these files hold chemical reaction equations. They are used with software like ChemEQL to record formulas, balance reactions, and support equilibrium calculations in chemical research. Although you can open them with any text editor, proper analysis usually requires specialized software.

Genetic Data Analysis Output: some of EQU files are generated as output from genetic data analysis programs. These files log analysis details and simulation results, and they too are stored in text form.

How to open EQU files

You need a suitable software like ChemEQL to open an EQU file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your EQU file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a EQU file directly in the browser:. EQU file format:

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. The EQU file extension is rarely used and covers different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 25% of all EQU files have the same signature 00 00. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. A typical file size is 240 bytes. Such files are related to iodine, permanganate, naoh, thiosulfate, hardness, hydrogen, peroxide, water, agno and edta.
• 10% of all EQU files start with the bytes gen allel Ho Hs Ht Fis Fst Fit , which are crucial for this file format. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. EQU files can be up to 160 KB in size, but are often around 1 KB - 150 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: Fis, Fit, Fst, allel and gen.
