All about EQU Files
The EQU file type is primarily associated with ChemEQL.
What is an EQU file?
How to open EQU files
You need a suitable software like ChemEQL to open an EQU file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your EQU file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a EQU file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

EQU file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the EQU files looks like this:
The EQU file extension is rarely used and covers different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 25% of all EQU files have the same signature 00 00. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. A typical file size is 240 bytes. The file name iodine_thiosulfate.equ or water_hardness.equ is typical for these files. Such files are related to iodine, permanganate, naoh, thiosulfate, hardness, hydrogen, peroxide, water, agno and edta.
- 10% of all EQU files start with the bytes gen allel Ho Hs Ht Fis Fst Fit , which are crucial for this file format. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. EQU files can be up to 160 KB in size, but are often around 1 KB - 150 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: Fis, Fit, Fst, allel and gen.
The remaining 65% of all EQU files are different files with different signatures, often e.g. VERSION and HEADER. The category is equation, right or gfxe. You can get all the details of your EQU file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .equ file to analyze" above.

How to solve problems with EQU files
- Associate the EQU file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open text files. Because only the current version supports the latest EQU file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available ChemEQL update.
- To make sure that your EQU file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .EQU file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
