Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. ER2 is rarely used as a file extension and is used by different programs with different formats. The file formats most commonly found in ER2 files are:

• 25% of all ER2 files use the popular UTF-8 file format. UTF-8 is the World Wide Web's most common character encoding for Unicode. UTF-8 files can be viewed with any text editor. These files start with the 3 bytes  (hex: EF BB BF), the so called byte order mark (BOM). These files are text files, so they contain words and text. Most of these files are 230 bytes to 2 KB in size. The files contain the following words: 062025 and 810001.
• 20% of all ER2 files have the same signature 1REF BIJ156. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. ER2 files can be up to 4 KB in size, but are often around 2.4 KB - 2.7 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. DATE, LIMITED, MACQUARIE GROUP, TIME, 2020 PAGE   1, 4884   TRANSACTION UPLOAD POST PROCESSI and 9999   TRANSACTION UPLOAD POST PROCESSI.
