What is a BMAP file?

BMAP files mostly belong to Fontographer. BMAP files serve different, specialized roles.
Old Mac OS Bitmap Fonts:

This format is used for bitmap fonts on older Mac systems. These fonts are handled by Fontographer and were originally stored using FONDLib.

Image Texture Files:

BMAP files can contain image data for textures. They are often used in game assets, as seen with Wreckfest, and can be edited in image programs like GIMP (more details).

Keyboard Mapping Files:

Some BMAP files work as keyboard layout maps. Programs such as loadkeys use these files, with support from configurations like XKeyboardConfig (see kernel info).

XML Block Maps:

Another variant contains an XML-based block map for images. Such files are processed with tools like bmap-tools.

How can I open a BMAP file?

You need a suitable software like Fontographer to open a BMAP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your BMAP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a BMAP file directly in the browser:. BMAP file format details:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. The BMAP file extension covers different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in BMAP files:

• 40% of all BMAP files are based on the well-known Mac2OSX file format. The Mac2OSX format is an AppleDouble format and originally used to store additional metadata on Unix systems. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The average file size is 15 KB with most files being between 3 KB and 36 KB in size. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. The following keywords are characteristic: Mac OS X, FFILDMOV and ATTR. These files can be linked to bold, black, regular, light, sans, italic, interstate, normal and heavy.
• 30% of all BMAP files have the same signature 04 00 00 00 70 61 6D 62 03. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. A typical file size is 260 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: pamb, DDS !, data, textures and menu. A usual file name is skin01_c5.bmap or icon_ai_000_medium_64x64_raw.bmap. These files can be linked to skin, icon, medium, livery, background, skidmark, avatar and large.
