What is an ESG file?

ESG files mostly belong to APD2000. ESG files are not uniform; they serve different purposes in different fields.
One common type stores X-ray diffraction data. This kind of ESG file holds measurements from crystallography experiments. It is produced by systems such as those from APD2000 and is meant to be read by specialized software that analyzes diffraction patterns.
Another type of ESG file is used as a game save file. In this case the file holds saved progress for video games like Endless Space 2 and Age of Empires II. These game save files are compressed using GZIP and are intended to be opened by their respective game clients.

How to open ESG files

If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension.
