All about EVT Files
The EVT file type is primarily associated with Task Sheduler.
What is an EVT file?
How to open an EVT file
You need a suitable software like Task Sheduler to open an EVT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your EVT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a EVT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

EVT file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our examination of the EVT files comes to the following conclusion:
The EVT extension is quite commonly used. The file itself includes different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 35% of all EVT files belong to Windows Event Viewer Log. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. Most of these files are 28 KB to 14 MB in size. The file type is very old but is also used today. The keywords LfLe are typical for these files. Some examples of file names are SysEvent.Evt or AppEvent.Evt. These files can be linked to event, system, application, audit, logs, security, internet, hacked, maybe, power and shell.
- 9% of all EVT files start with the bytes _evt crucial for this file format. These files are not pure binary files and are therefore readable and interpretable with a text editor. The files are often between 170 bytes and 23 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as _evt0. EL_20180601.evt is a typical file name.
All other EVT files (56%) have no uniform format, the following 11 formats exist: config, ElfFile, APP and FORMAT. Often described as data, events, hevt, copspeech, actifio, tandero, mcscsp or resp. Just click the "Choose your .evt file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your EVT file is.

How to solve problems with EVT files
- Associate the EVT file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open event logs. Because only the current version supports the latest EVT file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Task Sheduler update.
- To make sure that your EVT file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
