What is an EXR file?

EXR files mostly belong to After Effects by Adobe. EXR is the filename extension of images saved in the OpenEXR (also known as EXR) raster image file format. An EXR file contains a high dynamic range image with multiple channels (RGB, diffuse, alpha, and normal) having different pixel sizes. The content of these files can also include multiple points of view and multi-layer graphics data which is suitable for editing purposes. It supports lossy and lossless compression methods as well as 16-bit floating point, 32-bit floating point, and 32-bit integer color depths. You may view or open images stored in EXR format with programs such as GIMP, Photoshop, After Effects, 3DS Max, and Blender.

How do you open EXR files?

You need a suitable software like After Effects to open an EXR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
