Opening F2 Files
The F2 file type is primarily associated with FlatBuffers.
What is an F2 file?
- FlatBuffers Binary File: This version of an F2 file contains serialized data created with the FlatBuffers library. The file is structured in a compact binary format. It is not meant to be read with a text editor. For more details, visit the FlatBuffers website.
- Labor Force Survey Data File: In other cases, an F2 file holds survey data encoded in UTF-8 as fixed-width ASCII text. This type of file is used for statistical analysis and is typically opened with software like Stata.
- BIOS Update File: Some F2 files are used as firmware update packages for motherboards. They are processed by update utilities such as the American Megatrends BIOS Update Utility. More information can be found on the AMI website. It is important to only use the official utility when performing a BIOS update.
FilExt.com note: Before opening an F2 file, confirm its origin and the associated software, as using the wrong tool could lead to errors or data loss.
How can I open an F2 file?
You need a suitable software like FlatBuffers to open an F2 file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your F2 file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a F2 file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

F2 format details:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. In the following you will find our evaluation of the F2 files:
The F2 file ending includes different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in F2 files:
- 35% of all F2 files have the same signature 00 00. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. F2 files can be up to 68 GB in size, but are often around 37 MB - 16 GB. It is a modern file type. Examples of file names are default.f2.
- 9% of all F2 files use the popular UTF-8 file format. UTF-8 is the World Wide Web's most common character encoding for Unicode. UTF-8 files can be viewed with any text editor. These files start with the 3 bytes (hex: EF BB BF), the so called byte order mark (BOM). These files are text files, so they contain words and text. The file size is in the range of 14 MB to 16 MB. An example of a file name is LFS0119-20180601-NEWSAMPLE-PUF.F2 or LFS0120-20180601-2015BASEDOPTION2-PUF.F2. These files are attributed to newsample and basedoption.
All other F2 files (56%) have different formats. If you want to find out what your F2 file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with F2 files
- Associate the F2 file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest F2 file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available FlatBuffers update.
- To make sure that your F2 file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
