What is a ROM file?
How to open ROM files
You need a suitable software like Project64 to open a ROM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ROM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ROM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

ROM file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our evaluation of the ROM files looks like this:
The ROM file extension is very common and is used by many programs, each with its own file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in ROM files:
- 15% of all ROM files are BIOS ROM Extension files. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are often between 62 KB and 520 KB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. 761295520. These files are attributed to radeonrx, sapphire, bios, samsung, gigabyte, asus, navi and ellesmere.
- 10% of all ROM files use the same file format, which have the signature NVGI. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The average file size is 260 KB with most files being between 180 KB and 1 MB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as NVGI. These files are often associated with zotac, evga, nvidia, geforcertx, original and super.
All other ROM files (75%) have different formats, often, for example, MSX ROM Image, Killing Floor Map, ZIP, SQL, EXE, ASUSTEK, ACT, GUR, AMINCBLK, NDI, MMM and MORR. Tagged as plus, fwhi, deluxe, kawaks, micron or gddr. If you want to find out which format your ROM file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .rom file to analyze".

a rom game image is a special file format by Zilmar, Shygoo, and Azimer and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with ROM files
- Associate the ROM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open game images. Because only the current version supports the latest ROM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Zilmar, Shygoo, and Azimer manufacturer website after an available Project64 update.
- To make sure that your ROM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .ROM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
