What is a FACE file?

FACE files mostly belong to Gallery by Samsung. FACE filename extension is associated with image files captured by Samsung mobile phone facial recognition software. Such FACE files contain cropped photographs of the faces of subjects (persons, dogs etc.) in the images stored in the phone's gallery. These files are typically located in the /storage/emulated/.face/ directory and they are used for image tagging. Some UNIX-based operating systems such as Ubuntu save each user's avatar in a PNG or bitmap file with FACE filename extension. This kind of FACE files are used by the GNOME Display Manager when displaying a user's profile on the login or settings screen. You can also open a FACE file with XnView image processing software. Some smartwatches store watch faces in FACE files. Facer software may be used to open and install watch faces stored in FACE format. FaceServer, an older UNIX operating system software also saved images in FACE files.

How to open a FACE file

You need a suitable software like Gallery to open a FACE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FACE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FACE file directly in the browser:.
