All about FD Files
The FD file type is primarily associated with UEFITool.
What is an FD file?
For example, many FD files act as firmware disk images that store BIOS or UEFI firmware. These files include boot code and configuration data, and are used by tools in environments such as QEMU or development kits like EDK2.
They can also be created as floppy disk images with tools from Flash Develop or Flash Development Toolkit, and in some cases, they serve as asset containers in games – for example, holding font data or fastfile content in Call of Duty titles.
Other uses include specialized data storage (such as the ADBS file format used with Micro Focus systems).
The different uses mean that opening an FD file requires identifying its context.
Key uses include:
How can I open an FD file?
You need a suitable software like UEFITool to open an FD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert FD files:
- UEFITool
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. FD files are often referred to as UEFITool disk images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- DataFlex (Field Compiler Offsets) by Data Access Corporation
- Final Draft (Document File) by Final Draft, Inc.Final Draft is a word processor specifically designed for writing movie scripts, television episodics and stage plays. This is an extension used by older versions of the program. It now uses .FDR.

FD file format details:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the FD files:
The FD file type is used by many programs, each with its own file format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 10% of all FD files are using the well-known EXE file format to store the data. EXE is the abbreviation for executable and is the standard executable file format on Windows. The format can be identified by the letters "MZ" at the beginning. Executable files can also be used to distribute viruses and other types of malicious software (malware). They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 6 MB to 18 MB. The file name BIOS.fd is typical for these files.
- 10% of all FD files use the same file format, which have the signature 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The average file size is 540 KB with most files being between 130 KB and 3 MB in size. The keywords _FVH and ir;M are typical for these files. The file name OVMF_VARS-1024x768.fd or OVMF_CODE.fd is typical for these files. These files are often associated with ovmf, vars and code.
All other FD files (80%) have no consistent format, frequently e.g. LaTeX Font Definition and ADBS. These files are often connected to aachen, common, custom, acer or core. Just click the "Choose your .fd file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your FD file is.

an fd disk image file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with FD files
- Associate the FD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open disk image files. Because only the current version supports the latest FD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available UEFITool update.
- To make sure that your FD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .FD file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
