What is a FIF file?

FIF files mostly belong to MNE-Python. FIF files are specialized binary data files that serve different purposes. In many cases, they store neuroimaging raw data such as MEG (magnetoencephalography) and EEG (electroencephalography) recordings used in brain research. These files are processed by tools like MNE-Python.

Fractal Image Data: Some FIF files are used as a Fractal Image Format. This variant is seen in image processing applications and may be managed with viewers like XnViewMP.

Compressed Image Files: A smaller set of FIF files use an internal JPG format, representing compressed image data. They are sometimes described as raw neuroimaging images.

How to open a FIF file

You need a suitable software like MNE-Python to open a FIF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. • 30% of all FIF files are associated with Fractal Image Format bitmap. They consist of unreadable binary data. The average file size is 42 KB with most files being between 14 KB and 1 MB in size. Files like these have the following tags: metallo.
