All about EDF Files
The EDF file type is primarily associated with MATLAB.
What is an EDF file?
How to open EDF files
You need a suitable software like MATLAB to open an EDF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your EDF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a EDF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert EDF files:
- MATLAB by MathWorks
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. EDF files are often referred to as MATLAB data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Bathymetric Data Viewer (exported oceanography/meteorological data) by NOAABathymetric Data Viewer is a web application for viewing and analyzing underwater depth and other marine information. It can open and visualize ocean temperature, depth, sound velocity and other oceanography data collected by sensors mounted on NOAA marine vessels. This file format is classified as Data.
- Darkroom (image project) by DarkroomDarkroom is a professional photography software for processing, editing, green-screening, and printing images. It uses an EDF file to store an image editing project. This file format is classified as Raster Image.
- Digital TrainerThis file format is classified as Encoded.
- DrumBeat (component) by GroundlevelDrumbeat is an obsolete peer-to-peer file-sharing and file search program. It uses a component saved in an EDF file. This file format is classified as Data.
- Edificius (architectural design project) by ACCAEdificius is a building information modeling and architectural design software. It saves an architectural design project in an EDF file. This file format is classified as CAD.
- Efficient Diary (diary) by EfficientEfficient Diary is a free, cross-platform electronic diary and journaling software. It saves a diary in a EDF file. This file format is classified as Data.
- eMemoPad (data) by eMemoPadeMemoPad is an outline editing software that organizes documents as a directory tree for ease of access. It saves some data in an EDF file. This file format is classified as Data.
- Jupyter Notebook (biological data) by Project JupyterJupyter Notebook is a client-server web application for viewing and analyzing scientific datasets saved in various formats. It can import, visualize, and analyze an EDF file containing biological and physical signal data saved in the JSON-based Jupyter Notebook format. This file format is classified as Data. - RF Online (game data archive) by PlayParkRF Online is a massively multiplayer online role-playing video game for Windows desktop. It uses an EDF file to store game data such as textures, strings, scripts, and sounds. This file format is classified as Game. Related links: EDF Converter
- Workshare Synergy (document change management data) by LiteraWorkshare Synergy is a discontinued Word add-in used for collaborative document processing. Its document change management data is saved in an EDF file. This file format is classified as Data.
EDF format details:
To view or edit EDF files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the EDF files comes to the following conclusion:
EDF is a very widely used file extension. The file type is used by different programs with different formats. The following file formats are most commonly found in EDF files:
- 55% of all EDF files are associated with European Data Format. They consist of unreadable binary data. The file size is in the range of 920 bytes to 42 MB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Startdate. The file name 20180601_BRP.edf or 20180601_CSL.edf is typical for these files. Files like these have the following tags: hypnogram, subject, ecgca, task, streaming, patient, export, monopolar and apdx.
- 9% of all EDF files have the same signature RF Online by . If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are 20 KB to 14 MB in size, with a median of 3 MB. The keywords RF Online by OdinTeam s(^O^)z are typical for these files. An example of a file name is Item.edf or ItemCombine.edf. Such files sometimes refer to combine, character, resource, cash, store and force.
All other EDF files (36%) have no consistent format, often, for example, Source, XML, AAMVHFSS, EdfVersion, IrisDB and RESEARCH. These files are often connected to myambience, sensirion, design, humigadget, project, smart or data. If you want to find out which format your EDF file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .edf file to analyze".

How to solve problems with EDF files
- Associate the EDF file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open biological data files. Because only the current version supports the latest EDF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the MathWorks manufacturer website after an available MATLAB update.
- To make sure that your EDF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .EDF file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
