What is a FIL file?

FIL files mostly belong to dBASE by dBase. FIL filename extension is used by a text file containing the list of database objects saved in a database created with earlier versions of dBase database management system. The contents of a FIL file are used to define the structure (schema) of databases. The main database file created by Cardbox also has FIL filename extension. FIL filename extension is further associated with bitmap images used as logos and application icons on Symbian S60 smartphones. WordPerfect, a suite of office productivity tools uses FIL filename extension to save overlay files. AVG antivirus software saves potentially infected data in a FIL file before putting it in quarantine. ZENworks, a system management software saves the source code of applications created with its snapshot utility in FIL files. Media Player 10 and later versions store special icons in FIL files. SeeYou saves flight data in FIL, and ProWORX saves exported data in FIL files.

How to open FIL files

You need a suitable software like dBASE to open a FIL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. FIL file format:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. The FIL file ending is used by many programs, each with its own file format. But the following two file formats are common:

15% of all FIL files start with the bytes 00 10 00 00 09 00 00 00, which are crucial for this file format. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are 12 KB to 27 MB in size, with a median of 3 MB. The file type is very recent. These files can be linked to buckling and static.
8% of all FIL files are using the well-known PNG file format to store the data. PNG is short for Portable Network Graphics. It is a high-quality raster image file that supports lossless data compression. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The average file size is 3 KB with most files being between 1 KB and 5 KB in size. The keywords IHDR, pHYs, OiCCPPhotoshop ICC profile, SgTS, tEXtSoftware, IDATx and gAMA are typical for these files. A usual file name is DevLogo.fil or DevLogo[1].fil.
