What is an FRW file?

FRW files mostly belong to KOMPAS-3D. FRW files are known for their specialized roles in engineering and data logging.
They are most commonly used as KOMPAS-3D CAD drawing files, storing vector-based design data for 3D models and technical drafts. These files, created by KOMPAS-3D software from ASCON, can sometimes be packaged using a ZIP internal format or encoded in UTF-8, which means parts of the file may be compressed or stored as text.

How to open an FRW file

You need a suitable software like KOMPAS-3D to open an FRW file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. FRW file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below is our analysis of the FRW files:

The file type with the extension 'FRW' is used by different programs with different formats. The following file formats are most commonly found in FRW files:

• 50% of all FRW files start with the magic bytes KF, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. Most of these files are 29 KB to 1 MB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. The files contain the following words: DbQ8, DOCUMENT_IMAGE and HdR9$. A common filename is Flip 3D.frw. Files like these are sometimes connected to plotnikova.
• 35% of all FRW files use ZIP compression, so multiple files are compressed and stored together in one FRW file. An FRW file can contain up to 9 files (mostly 5 - 6). File names are e.g. Contents, FileInfo, MetaInfo, MetaProductInfo, Preview and SysInfo. If you want to see the included files and images, simply rename the file extension to .zip and double-click it. A typical file size is 60 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as AppName, FileInfo, [FileInfo], AppVersion=KOMPA and -3D V16.
