What is an FRX file?

FRX files mostly belong to Visual Studio by Microsoft. An FRX file is a form written in Visual Basic programming language. An FRX form file contains commands which render form control elements (buttons, labels, text boxes) and handle data entry operations. A Visual Basic compiler bundled with .NET framework software development kit may be used to compile an FRX file within Visual Studio integrated development environment. Visual Basic forms can also be created and used within other Microsoft applications such as Excel and Access. Another type of FRX file is a report generated by Visual FoxPro database management system and programming language.

How to open an FRX file

You need a suitable software like Visual Studio to open an FRX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. FRX file format details:

To view or edit FRX files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. The FRX file extension is very common and is used by different programs with different formats. The following file formats are most commonly found in FRX files:

• 30% of all FRX files are based on the well-known XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The files are on average 24 KB in size and range from 4 KB to 140 KB. The file type is relatively new. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>, ReportInfo, Created, <Report ScriptLanguage="CSharp", Modified and CreatorVersion. Such FRX files store data about invoice, report, receipt, template, sales, products, demo and list.
• 30% of all FRX files start with the magic bytes 00 00, which are always the first bytes of this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view the contents and find segments of text. FRX files are between 9 KB and 38 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as NAME, OBJCODE, OBJTYPE, PLATFORM, TIMESTAMP and UNIQUEID. Files like these have the following tags: icbil, factura, bill, sale, form and fact.

All other FRX files (40%) have no uniform format, often e.g. Microsoft Visual Basic Form, GZIP, JetDB, PDF, UTF-16 (LE), JPG, ZIP, HTML, FRSXXBLO, Qlt and TProgetto.
