To find out what program is needed to open FTA files, you need to determine the file format. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. The FTA file extension is not common and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 40% of all FTA files start with the bytes 07 5A crucial for this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are on average 1 MB in size and range from 140 KB to 1 MB. This is an old file type which is rarely used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. ZIN0001 and kemiri. Some examples of file names are indo.fta or kenya.fta. These files can be linked to india.
• 25% of all FTA files have the same signature 07 42. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 220 KB to 12 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. B100000 and Wholemeal breads. Examples of file names are blsges.fta or fao-ml.fta.
