What is an FTD file?

FTD files mostly belong to FormTool Pro. FTD files are not a single format but a group of files that use the same extension for different purposes.
They can serve several roles depending on the software that created them. Common examples include:

How to open an FTD file

You need a suitable software like FormTool Pro to open an FTD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. The FTD file extension is not common and includes many different file formats. The following file formats are most commonly found in FTD files:

20% of all FTD files internally use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known by the name OLE2 Compound Document Format or Composite Document File Format. This Windows file format has features similar to those of a filesystem format with virtual files and subfolders. Header signature for the CFB format with 8-byte Hex value D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). They consist of illegible, cryptic characters.
