Opening FTD Files
The FTD file type is primarily associated with FormTool Pro.
What is an FTD file?
They can serve several roles depending on the software that created them. Common examples include:
- Form Documents: Files such as a FormTool document or FormFlow Filler Template. These are sometimes stored using the Microsoft Compound format and are used with products like FormTool Design and FormTool Pro.
- Data Files: Some FTD files are used as Frimat data files. They store form template data and other structured inputs.
- Financial/Flight Record Files: Other FTD files serve as Financial Transaction Data files or Flight Data Recorder Files. These files are linked with companies such as FTD2XX. For more details, visit FTDiChip.
- Text/Schedule Files: A smaller group of FTD files functions as Italian text or schedule documents. These are associated with products like Fantacalcio Manager and FTD Designer. See more information at Fantacalcio Manager.
If you have an FTD file, determine its origin to decide the correct application to view it.
Files using the Microsoft Compound format may need a specialized viewer, while simpler text files might open in any basic text editor. Advanced users can check the file header with a hex editor to verify its structure.
FilExt.com tip: Understanding the specific role of your FTD file is key to choosing the proper software.
How to open an FTD file
You need a suitable software like FormTool Pro to open an FTD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FTD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FTD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert FTD files:
- FormTool Pro
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. FTD files are often referred to as FormTool Pro data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- FFTDesigner by RHDC Services Ltd.FFTDesigner is a Fourier Fast Transform simulator that allows you to gauge performance using a number of standard window functions. Fast Fourier Transform is an efficient algorithm to compute a specific kind of mathematical transform of signals between domains, taking a reoccurring function that displays the same output at regular intervals and decomposes it into the sum of a set of simple oscillating functions.
FTD file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the FTD files looks like this:
As a file extension, FTD isn't very common and includes many different file formats. The following file formats are most commonly found in FTD files:
- 10% of all FTD files start with the magic bytes 2B 32, which are always the first bytes of this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are on average 30 KB in size and range from 3 KB to 99 KB. The keywords MJ-F and Z04R8_6 are typical for these files. A usual file name is 20180601.FTD.
- 10% of all FTD files use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This file format is used by previous Microsoft Office programs and other Windows programs and stores the data in complex containers and sections. The Compound Document format is always starting with the bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are on average 100 KB in size and range from 17 KB to 190 KB. These files are often associated with vertrieb, aufnahme, fbogen, ausland, mitgliedsbescheinigung and versicherte, and frequently comprise personal data.
The remaining 80% of all FTD files are different files with different signatures, such as ZIP, UTF-16 (LE), FTD and Bulk. Often described as lezione, table, audit, data, combine, ftrfb or conf. If you want to find out which format your FTD file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .ftd file to analyze".
Technical Data for FTD File Extension
an ftd data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with FTD files
- Associate the FTD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest FTD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available FormTool Pro update.
- To make sure that your FTD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .FTD file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
