What is a GD file?

GD files mostly belong to Godot Engine. GD Files serve several roles in game development and data management.
They are not a single file type; instead, usage depends on the application that created them.
  • Game Data File: A *.gd file acts as a game data file that may use a .NET‐like internal format. This version stores in‐game assets and settings. See Unity for related details.
  • GDScript Source File: some are GDScript files used by the Godot Engine. These plain text files contain game logic and can be edited with a text editor. More information is available at Godot Engine.
  • SUREXML Document: some follow the SUREXML document format (SEP2__SUREXML) used in specialized data handling.
  • Game Save File: Close to *.gd files are game save files, such as those produced by Game Maker Studio 2.
  • Opening and Viewing: The method depends on the file. For a GDScript file, a text editor with syntax support works well. For binary game data or save files, use the corresponding game engine’s editor or a specialized viewer.

How to open a GD file

You need a suitable software like Godot Engine to open a GD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert GD files:

    1. Godot Engine
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. GD files are often referred to as Godot Engine games because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
    2. Godot Engine
The *.gd file extension is primarily associated with the Godot Engine, an open-source, cross-platform game engine. These files typically contain GDScript code, the engine's built-in scripting language, used for defining game logic, object behavior, and other functionalities within Godot Engine projects. While less common, *.gd can also represent game data files within other game development contexts, sometimes associated with the Unity engine. In such cases, the internal structure and content of the *.gd file are specific to the engine or game using it. This file format is classified as Game Development File.
