All about GD Files
The GD file type is primarily associated with Godot Engine.
What is a GD file?
They are not a single file type; instead, usage depends on the application that created them.
How to open a GD file
You need a suitable software like Godot Engine to open a GD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert GD files:
- Godot Engine
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. GD files are often referred to as Godot Engine games because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Godot EngineThe *.gd file extension is primarily associated with the Godot Engine, an open-source, cross-platform game engine. These files typically contain GDScript code, the engine's built-in scripting language, used for defining game logic, object behavior, and other functionalities within Godot Engine projects. While less common, *.gd can also represent game data files within other game development contexts, sometimes associated with the Unity engine. In such cases, the internal structure and content of the *.gd file are specific to the engine or game using it. This file format is classified as Game Development File.
GD file format:
To view or edit GD files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the GD files comes to the following conclusion:
The GD file extension is quite common and includes various formats for various programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 30% of all GD files internally utilize the .NET file format. The .NET format is used to save Microsoft .NET Framework objects to a file (ex. save game state as file) via object serialization. Such a .NET object may contain functions and data like settings, images or videos. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The file size is in the range of 1 KB to 1 MB. The file type was created recently. The keywords FAssembly-CSharp, Version=0.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null are typical for these files. savedGames.gd or savedGames_Release0.gd is a typical file name. Such files are related to saved, games, release, data, game, save, wttg, backup and apvw.
- 15% of all GD files start with the bytes extends , which are crucial for this file format. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are often between 250 bytes and 17 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. extends, func and Node. The file name Player.gd is characteristic of these files. Such files are related to manager and button.
All other GD files (55%) have different formats, frequently e.g. XML, BGD, class and sIA. The category is darkrise, setting, state, character, progress, keybind or spsaved. If you want to find out which format your GD file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .gd file to analyze".
Technical Data for GD File Extension

EXEFile: %ProgramFiles%\Invitrogen\Vector NTI Advance 10\Vector NTI 10.exe
a gd game data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with GD files
- Associate the GD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open game data files. Because only the current version supports the latest GD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Godot Engine update.
- To make sure that your GD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .GD file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
