Opening a GDF File
The GDF file type is primarily associated with GUESS.
What is a GDF file
- Main Use: GUESS is a data analysis application used in the visualization of graphs and networks. The GPF file consists of a special data set for GUESS graphs which define the edges, nodes, and other elements. This edge and node data make up the graph and subgraphs used in visualizing research and academic environments. The data in the GDF file consists of a set of lines, saved in a plain text format that specify the nodes and edges of the graph.
- Other Uses: GDF files are also associated with the 3D Move structural geology modeling software developed by Midland Valley Exploration Ltd. 3D Move GDF files contain information needed for building 3D geological models that can be used by the software to model geological processes. GDF can also stand for GD Font file used in PHP (PHP Hypertext Preprocessor) for labeling the GDF bitmap font files in the GD library. GDF font file is a binary file that stores the bitmap version of font characters in an architecture dependent encoding. GDF is also used as a Geometry Definition File format in association with the WAMIT software developed by WAMIT Inc. The file is used in the modeling of ocean wave impact on man-made structures by saving the single body geometry within a WAMIT model in the GDF syntax.
How to open GDF files
You need a suitable software like GUESS to open a GDF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GDF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GDF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert GDF files:
- GUESS by GUESS
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. GDF files are often referred to as GUESS simple text files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- FutuRUG (group definition file) by Two Brothers SoftwareFutuRUG is a software designed to aid the American Medicare-A Therapy Provider within the Skilled Nursing Facility by optimizing their working time while maintaining RUG-III classifications. The GDF file contains the optimized database created by the FutuRUG software, where it is able to be distributed amongst users. This file format is classified as Database.
- GEOS (dictionary file) by Berkeley SoftworksGEOS is an antiquated 8-bit operating system created by Berkeley Softworks, originally designed for the Commodore 64, later continued by GeoWorks. The GDF files were utilized as dictionary files within the operating system. This file format is classified as Settings.
- Gephi (graph data format file) by GephiGephi is an open-source analysis and visualization software primarily designed for all kinds of graphs and networks, where it is used by data analysts to discover trends and patterns within their data such that they are able to tell a story through the visualization. The GDF file is built like a database table and has support attributes for both nodes and edges. This file format is classified as Simple text file. Related links: Gephi wikipedia
- GlossTeXGlossTeX is an integrative tool for the automatic preparation of glossaries, lists of acronyms, and sorted lists within LaTeX. GlossTeX is able to combine the functionality of the acronym and nomencl packages, whilst providing new features as well. The GDF file contains all of the necessary zipped files and definitions needed to fully integrate this tool into LaTeX. This file format is classified as Plugin. Related links: Contents of the tool
- GRAFIK Eye Designer (project file) by Lutron Electronics, Inc.GRAFIK Eye Designer is a lighting control system designed for conference rooms, retail spaces, and large/open auditoriums. The GRAFIK Eye Designer program instructs Lutron lights to dim or brighten through a flexible and customizable interface. The GDF file stores the lighting project within the integrated software. This file format is classified as Settings. Related links: Design and configuration software
- MOVE (3D geological model file) by PetexMOVE provides a suite of programs for integrating and interpreting data, cross-section construction, geomechanical modeling, fault and stress analysis, and many more tools, all accessed through their own individual programs within the MOVE Suite. The GDF files contain the geological data used within each of these programs while being stored within a binary file format. This file format is classified as GIS.
- Quartus II (graphic design file) by Altera CorporationQuartus II design software is a comprehensive environment available for system-on-a-programmable-chip (SOPC) design, where it enables the analysis of HDL designs. The GDF file stores various data which is used for internal purposes within Quartus II, such as schematic design data and graphical design data. This file format is classified as Data.
- WebSphere Development Studio (bitmap file) by IBMWebSphere Development Studio is an integrated development environment for various platforms, where it serves as a workstation development tool for creating, testing, and maintaining traditional as well as e-business applications. The GDF file stores bitmap images through the bitmap graphics data format. This file format is classified as Raster Image.
GDF file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our analysis of the GDF files produces the following result:
Files with the GDF extension are quite widely used. This file type includes various formats for various programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 30% of all GDF files use the same file format, which have the signature nodedef>. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. Most of these files are 310 bytes to 810 KB in size. The file type is a fairly new file format. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as label VARCHAR, nodedef>name VARCHAR,label, VARCHAR,isSeed VARCHAR,seedRank, publishedAt, seedRank INT and viewCount. A common filename is pycallgraph.gdf. Files like these have the following tags: nodes, search, videonet, channelnet, seeds, videoinfo, commentnetwork and channels.
- 20% of all GDF files are associated with General Data Format for biosignals. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The file size is in the range of 6 KB to 35 MB. The keywords GDF 1 and b4om2.01 are typical for these files. A01E.gdf or B0101T.gdf is a typical file name. These files can be linked to subject, motorexecution, motorimagination and group.
All other GDF files (50%) have no consistent format, the following 9 formats can be found: DOC, EXE and generating. Tagged as angry, birds, eigen, mudlog, font or collar. If you want to find out which format your GDF file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .gdf file to analyze".
Technical Data for GDF File Extension
a gdf graph data format file is a special file format by GUESS and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with GDF files
- Associate the GDF file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open graph data format files. Because only the current version supports the latest GDF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the GUESS manufacturer website after an available GUESS update.
- To make sure that your GDF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .GDF file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
