What is an NPZ file?

NPZ files mostly belong to NumPy. NPZ files are compressed archives used mainly by the NumPy library in Python.
They store one or more arrays by packaging each array in a binary format (.npy) into a single zip file.
Purpose and usage:

Compressed Storage: Multiple numeric arrays are saved in one file to reduce storage space.

Serialization: They allow for fast saving and loading of data arrays in scientific computing.

How to open and view:

Use the Python function np.load from the NumPy library to read the file.

You can also unzip the file with a standard zip tool to see the contained .npy files, though their binary data is intended for program use.

How to open an NPZ file

You need a suitable software like NumPy to open an NPZ file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NPZ file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NPZ file directly in the browser:. Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the NPZ files:

NPZ is a very common file type and predominantly uses a uniform format. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 95% of all NPZ files are based on the zip format, multiple files are compressed and combined into one NPZ file. An NPZ file contains 1 to 6 files, the average being 3. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. Most of these files are 3 KB to 82 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. NUMPY, descr, shape and 'fortran_order': False. A usual file name is mnist.npz. Files like these have the following tags: data, train, images, dataset, face, faces, imdb, simplified and recipes.
• 1% of all NPZ files start with the bytes 93 4E 55 4D 50 59 01 00, which are crucial for this file format. Most of these files are 1 KB to 2 MB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: NUMPY, {'descr': '<f8', 'fortran_order': False, 'shape': () and {'descr': '<f8', 'fortran_order': False, 'shape': (), }. Files like these are about answer, and contain person-related data.
