All about NPZ Files
The NPZ file type is primarily associated with NumPy.
What is an NPZ file?
They store one or more arrays by packaging each array in a binary format (.npy) into a single zip file.
Purpose and usage:
How to open an NPZ file
You need a suitable software like NumPy to open an NPZ file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NPZ file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NPZ file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert NPZ files:
- NumPy
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. NPZ files are often referred to as NumPy compresseds because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- nProtect (GameGuard Update File) by INCA Internet Co, Ltd.nProtect is a new Web-based anti-hacking & anti-virus tool designed to protect PC terminals from being infected by viruses or hacking tools. A game client which uses GameGuard downloads .NPZ files and extracts them for game hacking protection. NPZ files are mostly GameGuard updates located at the game server's host. When downloading a game client with GameGuard, first the GameGuard initializes itself, checks for updates, and if any, downloads NPZ files from the remote host (probably the game server's host).
NPZ file format details:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the NPZ files:
NPZ is a very common file type and predominantly uses a uniform format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 95% of all NPZ files are based on the zip format, multiple files are compressed and combined into one NPZ file. An NPZ file contains 1 to 6 files, the average being 3. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. Most of these files are 3 KB to 82 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. NUMPY, descr, shape and 'fortran_order': False. A usual file name is mnist.npz. Files like these have the following tags: data, train, images, dataset, face, faces, imdb, simplified and recipes.
- 1% of all NPZ files start with the bytes 93 4E 55 4D 50 59 01 00, which are crucial for this file format. Most of these files are 1 KB to 2 MB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: NUMPY, {'descr': '<f8', 'fortran_order': False, 'shape': () and {'descr': '<f8', 'fortran_order': False, 'shape': (), }. Files like these are about answer, and contain person-related data.
The remaining 4% of all NPZ files are files with no common format. The category is archive, results, model, training, labels, matrix, output or lidar. If you want to find out which format your NPZ file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .npz file to analyze".
Technical Data for NPZ File Extension
an npz archive is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with NPZ files
- Associate the NPZ file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open archives. Because only the current version supports the latest NPZ file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available NumPy update.
- To make sure that your NPZ file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .NPZ file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
