How to open GDT files
You need a suitable software like gretl to open a GDT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GDT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GDT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

GDT file format details:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the GDT files:
An GDT file is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in GDT files:
- 25% of all GDT files are using the well-known GZIP file format to store the data. Gzip is a compressed archive file format. Gzip (GNU zip) is only capable of compressing a single file. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are often between 1 KB and 86 KB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. A usual file name is Assignment1.gdt. Files like these have the following tags: data and firms.
- 15% of all GDT files are gretl Data files, which are using the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. Most of these files are 1 KB to 14 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as <!DOCTYPE gretldata SYSTEM "gretldata.dtd">, frequency, endobs, startobs, type, <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, name, cross-section, <description>, <gretldata version="1.3" and time-series. The file name Table_1.1.gdt is typical for these files.
All other GDT files (60%) have different formats, the following 9 formats exist: DOC, Java and Untitled. They are often associated with sample, egain or unter. Just click the "Choose your .gdt file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your GDT file is.

How to solve problems with GDT files
- Associate the GDT file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest GDT file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available gretl update.
- To make sure that your GDT file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .GDT file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
