All about GEV Files
The GEV file type is primarily associated with ChemStation.
What is a GEV file
Most GEV files hold gas chromatography data. They record the output from instruments and can include detailed settings and measurement values.
Some users know these files as Yokogawa zeta potential data files, especially when produced with software like LabSpec 6.
You can open and analyze these files using lab instrument software such as that referenced on the ChemStation website.
How do you open GEV files?
You need a suitable software like ChemStation to open a GEV file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GEV file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GEV file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert GEV files:
- ChemStation
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. GEV files are often referred to as ChemStation data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Yokogawa's gas chromatography systemsA .GEV file is a gas chromatograph data file primarily used by Yokogawa's gas chromatography systems. It stores information related to chromatographic analyses, including retention times, peak areas, and other relevant data. This data is crucial for qualitative and quantitative analysis of chemical compounds in a sample. This file format is classified as Gas Chromatography Data.
GEV file format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the GEV files looks like this:
GEV is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type is mainly used by one program with a specific format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 99% of all GEV files use the same file format, which have the signature 00 00 00 30 00 00 00 00 01. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. GEV files are between 9 KB and 1 MB in size. The file type is relatively new. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as tYNSCFF.
All other GEV files (1%) have different formats. Just click the "Choose your .gev file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your GEV file is.
Technical Data for GEV File Extension
a gev data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with GEV files
- Associate the GEV file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest GEV file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available ChemStation update.
- To make sure that your GEV file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .GEV file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
