What is a RAW file?

RAW files mostly belong to DIFFRAC.EVA. RAW files hold unprocessed, instrument‐captured data that is preserved in its original state. These files do not have any built-in processing or compression, so they maintain every detail from the measurement device.

X‐ray diffraction data used in materials science is one example. One version is produced by devices associated with Commander and DIFFRAC.EVA; see ProtoXRD for details.

Sensor data files from instruments like X'Pert HighScore Plus record raw sensor output used in laboratory analysis.

Simulation raw data created by programs such as LTspice (more details at Analog) capture circuit simulation results in an unaltered form.

Test data files generated by systems like Instron Bluehill Universal capture mechanical test outcomes; these can be further examined using dedicated tools (Instron).

Some files use an HDF5 internal structure to store unprocessed image or numerical data. For this, applications like HDFView (see HDF Group) are useful.

There is also use in audio, where uncompressed recordings (e.g. by VAGp) are stored as RAW data.

How do you open RAW files?

You need a suitable software like DIFFRAC.EVA to open a RAW file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RAW file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RAW file directly in the browser:. How do you convert RAW files to JPG, PDF, HTML, DOC, ...

RAW file format details:

To view or edit RAW files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. In the following you will find our evaluation of the RAW files:

RAW is a very common file type and includes a lot of different file formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 9% of all RAW files use the same file format, which have the signature RAW. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are 5 KB to 22 KB in size, with a median of 14 KB. The file type was developed 20 years ago and is still in use today. The keywords RAW1.01 and Administrator are typical for these files. Such RAW files store data about madoomitha, subtracted, dharini and sample.
• 3% of all RAW files start with the magic bytes 54 00 69 00 74 00 6C 00 65, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The average file size is 2 KB with most files being between 940 bytes and 13 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: Title, Date, Users, Plotname and Desktop. These files are often associated with draft.

The remaining 88% of all RAW files are files with no common format, such as HSI Raw bitmap, CT Raw disk image, Panasonic RAW image, PNG, certificate, HDF5, Test, VAGp, RAW and ASNDASND. Files like these are sometimes linked to theta, extract, data, capture, tens, image, http, move, tlog or xxxx.
